What are Claude skills?
Claude skills (Agent Skills) are folders with a SKILL.md file: a name, a short description, and instructions the agent follows for a specific job, sometimes with scripts or reference files. The agent reads only the description up front and loads the full instructions when a task matches, so you can install many skills without slowing it down.
How do I install Claude Code skills?
Run npx skills add <owner/repo> to install a whole collection, or add --skill <name> for a single skill. Every skill page here has the exact command. You can also clone the repo and copy the skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ yourself.
Where are Claude Code skills stored?
Personal skills live in ~/.claude/skills/ and are available in every project. Project skills live in .claude/skills/ inside the repository, so everyone on the project gets them. Each skill is its own folder containing a SKILL.md.
What is the difference between skills and MCP?
MCP servers connect an agent to outside tools and data, such as a database or an API. Skills teach the agent how to do a task well with instructions and examples. They work together: a skill can tell the agent how to use the tools an MCP server provides.
Do Claude skills work in Codex, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot?
Yes. SKILL.md is an open format, and agents including Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, and OpenCode can load these skills. The skills CLI detects which agents you have and installs into the right folder for each.
Are these skills free?
Yes. Every skill listed comes from a public GitHub repository, and each page shows its license (most are MIT or Apache-2.0).
